Good Micro Brew & Grill: Good Beer and Good Company

It goes without saying that Good Microbrew & Grill has good beer.

Even so, I’ll say it again: GOOD HAS GOOD BEER.  Their beer menu is a legal-sized, two-sided novel in size 8 font.  It’s so overwhelming that every time I go I ask for a recommendation – and I recommend you do too, because what really makes Good great is the people.  One of the first times I went my boyfriend wanted to stay and have one more drink at the bar – this turned into a multiple hours of trying flights of IPA and the discovery that all beers on draft come in dangerously large goblets.  A few months later we were sitting in the same spot experiencing a heartbreaking sports loss.  What did our beermeister do?  Cut us a deal on some Allagash White and slipped in a bottle of his latest favorite for us to try.

While I think the above story is reason enough to block out a few hours of your night, I actually really like the food as well.  It’s not gourmet, but it’s big portions for reasonable prices and I have yet to be disappointed with a meal.  Doubters should try the Waldorf salad or mac and cheese and then tell me you didn’t leave satisfied.

Really though, screw the food – it’s all about the beer.

Garage Pizza: Garbage It Ain’t

It says something about a place, when around 2:30am across town in West LA a drunk person has a craving for food from there after having eaten it only once before.  First of all, it says that there are so few restaurants open at 2:30am it’s worth remembering when you encounter one.  More importantly, it says that the food must be pretty darn good.

And at Garage Pizza it is.  Whether you’re going for a slice of cheese or the intimidating “Annihilator” (meatball, pepperoni,sausage, red onion, bell pepper, mushroom, feta cheese) you’re going to get a great (and great BIG) slice.  Full pizzas are large too – the only option is 18” – so make sure you have at least one buddy to share, or a sizeable refrigerator.  Not in the pizza mood?  Garage Pizza has a selection of sandwiches and salads available until the wee hours as well – be careful though, the hotwings ain’t lying – they are hot!  Trust me though, you want to get the pizza.

These guys were also good enough to donate a couple pizzas to the Moonshine Inc. set for lunch one day, so go grab a slice and say thanks from me.

Recipe: The Sazerac

The cocktail that saves Win’s moonshine party or Cal’s “hypnotism networking opportunity” is one of the oldest cocktails in the country, born in New Orleans before the Civil War.  Since a lot has changed since the 1830’s there have been a lot of versions of the drink, but here’s one!

1 tsp sugar
1 1/2 oz rye whiskey
1 dash Deva absinthe
2 dashes Peychaud® bitters
2 dashes Angostura® bitters
1 twist lemon peel

Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling with crushed ice. In another glass mix the sugar with the bitters dissolving the sugar. Add some ice, stirring to chill. In the old-fashioned glass remove the ice and pour in the absinthe coating the entire glass. Remove the excess absinthe. Add the rye whiskey and bitters/sugar mixture. Add the lemon twist.

Little Dom’s: Home of the Bacon Old-Fashioned

Just off Los Feliz Blvd, sitting on a quiet streetcorner on Hillhurst, is Little Dom’s.  With its classic leather booths and dark wood, it’s the picture of a quaint, old-fashioned Italian café.  I must admit that I’ve only been for brunch, but it was an exciting one – due to both a star sighting of Jason Lee, and their amazing Scrambled Eggs Bruschetta with Grilled Baguette, Roasted Tomatoes & Pesto.  However, if words like “quiet” and “old-fashioned” don’t float your boat, then hopefully “bacon” and “booze” will.  Little Dom’s is the only place where you can wash down your eggs  with an ice cold bacon old-fashioned.  Win would be proud.

Raymond Richards featured on Aquarium Drunkard!

Not only is Raymond Richards a member of the band The Idaho Falls – who just had their record release party at Spaceland not too long ago – but he wrote an original song just for Moonshine Inc.  In like, a week.

And for those of you who live in the awesome Rancho Park area (Landmark Wine Bar anyone?) he gives you some great tips and suggestions of things to do and places to check out – I had no idea it was such a musically rich neighborhood!  Definitely check it out.
